Dutch international Strootman has recently been linked with Man United after a breakthrough season in the Dutch League. Having Joined PSV last summer he has went on to establish himself as a first team regular. Dutch Manager Bert van Marwijk has talked up his ‘vision’ to see the pass early, but for me he also has the steel we need in the centre. He doesn’t shy away from a tackle and his leadership has been praised by legendary Philip Cocu. His pass retention is 1st class and ball recycling is amongst the best in the business. It is unlikely he would move this summer having only been at PSV for a year. He has famously turned down the advances of foreign clubs to remain in his native Holland and will most likely wish to continue his development at PSV.
I wouldn’t claim to be an expert on the Dutch league but the little I have seen has lead me to formulate a few thoughts on Strootman. To sum up his game, I’d have to say he is an old-school central midfielder. He loves to pass; he loves to make runs off of the ball; he loves to power through defense’s; he loves to defend; he loves to keep the opponent guessing; he has a hell of a bullet-shot when needed. This type of footballer is a dying breed in the modern game but I feel they still have a place.
You find in the modern game it’s all about being an attacking midfielder or a defensive midfielder, never both. Strootman isn’t a flair player but, he doesn’t need the tricks because he has the vision to make up for it. As an engine room he inspires players around him and has determination to push on when the chips are down. In this respect his mentality is closer to Roy Keane but to me I think even this is a lazy comparison. Strootman doesn’t have the tenacity of Keane or is that viciousness. He is not a dirty player and doesn’t throw himself into the tackle. I think he has more in common with how Yaya Toure played for City last year, or Gerrard in his prime. However, the issue is that this is the Eredivisie, and unfortunately that league is not what it once was, and isn’t even a top league anymore, so translating talent is a very difficult thing.
Strootman definitely has the potential to achieve something in a higher league, but it would take very hard work and determination, which I think he has. But for anything more than £20 million to me seems daft, as he’s unproven at top level at the minute. The seller to me is that he has done it at International level and the Dutch coach rates him very highly indeed
Nevertheless, this kid’s got a lot of potential, and I think he’s definitely worth a shot at signing for a Premier League team at the right price. Whether PSV are willing to let go of a prize assets after only 12 months remains to be seen
